This guide assumes you’ve already purchased a VPS / dedicated server, and know how to access SSH with a SSH client such as PuTTY. This guide only goes through basic Minecraft installation. It’s also assumed that you have not installed Java or other necessary software.
Copy and paste the following lines in SSH after logging in.
- yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk
– This will install Java. - which java
– This will verify Java is installed. You should see /usr/bin/java. - cd
– Changes you to the root directory. - mkdir minecraft
– This will create your Minecraft directory, where Minecraft will be installed. - cd minecraft
– Changes your current directory to Minecraft’s directory. - wget http://minecraft.net/download/minecraft_server.jar
– This will download Minecraft to your server. - chmod +x minecraft_server.jar
– This will give Minecraft’s .jar file all necessary permissions to function. - yum install screen
– This will install screen, necessary to keep Minecraft running after you exit SSH. - screen
– This will take you to screen where you can start Minecraft and execute Minecraft commands. - java -Xmx512M -Xms512M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
– This will start Minecraft.

- java -Xmx512M -Xms512M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
– Start Minecraft on a 768MB server. - java -Xmx768M -Xms768M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
– Start Minecraft on a 1GB server. - java -Xmx1792M -Xms1792M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
– Start Minecraft on a 2GB server. - java -Xmx3840M -Xms3840M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
– Start Minecraft on a 4GB server. - Type all these keys at once while in screen to exit screen without closing Minecraft – CTRL + A + D.
- Type screen -r to return to screen to continue administering your Minecraft server.
